Price from evidence, not hope
Active listings show what sellers are asking. Completed sales, when a marketplace provides them, are stronger evidence of what buyers accepted. Neither source is perfect: condition, size, color, timing, shipping, and seller reputation can change the result.
Build a comparison set of genuinely similar items. Remove obvious outliers. Write down the differences instead of forcing every item into one average.
Establish the economic floor
Calculate your break-even sale price using purchase cost, verified fees, seller-paid shipping, packaging, and other variable costs. This tells you where recorded profit becomes zero.
Break-even does not guarantee the item is worth listing. Time, return risk, storage, and uncertainty still matter.
Adjust for condition and selling context
Describe defects honestly and price the actual item, not the best version online. Better photos and complete item specifics can improve buyer confidence, but they do not change the item's condition.
Account for whether shipping is included in the displayed price. Compare total buyer cost where possible.
Choose an asking price and a review plan
An asking price can leave room for an offer while remaining close enough to market evidence to attract qualified buyers. Decide in advance when you will review the listing and what evidence would justify a change.
Useful review signals include:
inventory age
views or interest when the marketplace exposes them
new comparable sales
seasonal changes
changes to fees or shipping cost
your current need to release capital
Avoid endless tiny edits without a decision rule.
Keep estimates and truth separate
Your asking price is a plan. The sold price is history. Record both. Once the item sells, reconcile actual proceeds and profit rather than preserving the original estimate as if it happened.
